Wanyeche shifts focus to Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship

After falling short in the closing stages of the Arusha Open, one of Tanzania's top amateur golfers Enosh Wanyeche has turned his attention to the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship, which tees at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

The four-day championship, running from July 23 to 26, is one of East Africa's premier amateur golf tournaments and is expected to attract the region's leading players as they battle for valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.

With the golfing season reaching its midpoint, July has become a crucial month for players chasing regional honours, making the Kenya championship one of the most anticipated events on the East African calendar.

Wanyeche heads to Nairobi determined to bounce back after an encouraging start at the recently concluded Arusha Open, where he led after the opening round before slipping down the leaderboard over the final two days.

Representing TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, in Dar es Salaam, Wanyeche opened the 54-hole Tanzania national championship with a superb one-under-par 71 to take an early lead.

However, he struggled to maintain the momentum, posting rounds of 79 and 80 to finish fourth overall.

The Arusha Open title was successfully defended by home player Jay Nathwani, who became the first golfer in recent years to win back-to-back titles after carding consistent rounds of 74, 74 and 75 for a total gross score of 223 (+7).

Despite the disappointment, Wanyeche said he has put the Arusha Open behind him and is now fully focused on the challenge awaiting him at the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship, where he expects the cool weather conditions at Royal Nairobi Golf Club to test every aspect of his game.

"I had to accept that things didn't go my way from the second round in Arusha. My driving and putting were not at the level I expected. I wanted to finish strongly before heading to Kenya, but sometimes golf doesn't go your way," Wanyeche said.

The Tanzanian golfer said he has learned valuable lessons from the Arusha Open and is confident of producing a stronger performance against East Africa's top amateur golfers.

 "I have recovered well and I'm ready for the Kenya challenge. It is another opportunity to compete at a high level and proudly represent Tanzania," he added.
