Dunia Opens Uganda Open Campaign with 75

KAMPALA, Tuesday

Tanzania’s Isiaka Dunia carded a three-over-par 75 in the opening round of the 2026 Uganda Open Golf Championship at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala on Tuesday, August 25, making a solid start to his four-day campaign.

Dunia, a player from TPDF Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam, is the only Tanzanian golfer in this year’s championship, where he is competing against a strong regional and international amateur field.

The 2026 Uganda Open, running from August 25 to 28, features 72 holes of stroke-play competition, with the field bringing together more than 116 elite amateur golfers from Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Eswatini, Namibia, Tanzania and the United States.

After the opening round, Dunia sits in a tie for 15th on 75, alongside a group of players including Uganda’s Ivan Ssekulima, Ashvin Kananathan, Joel Okoth, Denis Kabarira and Reagan Akena.

"It is one of the toughest tournaments, and I shot three-over-par today. It’s not a bad start, but I have to improve tomorrow to make the cut and put myself in a stronger position for the remaining rounds,” Dunia said.

Uganda’s Joseph Kasozi leads the championship after an impressive opening-round 68, four under par.

Abdullah Kakooza is second on 69, while John Musiimenta is third on 70. Lawrence Walakira occupies fourth place on 71.

Dunia’s opening-round score leaves him within reach of the leading group as the championship moves into its second day.

With the cut coming after two rounds, Wednesday’s round will be particularly important as he looks to climb the leaderboard and secure his place in the latter stages of the tournament.

For the Tanzanian golfer, the Uganda Open represents an important opportunity to measure himself against some of the region’s leading amateur players and gain valuable international tournament experience.

As Tanzania’s sole representative in Kampala, Dunia will also carry the country’s hopes into Wednesday’s second round, with the focus now firmly on improving his position and making a stronger push up the leaderboard.
