Mollel’s Consistency Earns Fourth in Uganda

KAMPALA, Saturday

Tanzania’s Nuru Mollel delivered one of the most consistent performances of the Uganda Professional Golf Open Championship, carding par or better in all four rounds to finish fourth overall at 3-under par.

Mollel opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and matched that score in Round 2.

He followed with an even-par 72 in the third round before closing with another 1-under-par 71 in the final round.

His four-round scores of 71, 71, 72 and 71 gave him a total of 284, three shots under par, underlining the consistency that kept him firmly among the tournament leaders throughout the championship.

Mollel had earlier acknowledged the difficulty of the course and the challenges posed by the conditions.

“The setup is different from what we are used to in Tanzania, while the greens are drying out quickly because of the clay soil,” Mollel told Royal Golf.

Despite the demanding conditions, Mollel remained determined to fight for a strong finish and fly the Tanzanian flag high—and he delivered.

The Tanzanian’s scorecards tell the story of a player who rarely allowed a round to get away from him.

In the opening round, he finished 1-under par after making birdies on the front nine and maintaining a steady back nine.

Round 2 produced another 71, while his 72 in Round 3 was his only level-par round of the tournament.

Mollel then responded impressively in the final round. After reaching the turn in 3-over-par 39, he produced a superb 5-under-par back nine of 32 to close with a 71.

That remarkable comeback proved crucial in securing his 3-under-par tournament total and a place in the top four.

On the final leaderboard, Mollel finished fourth at 3-under par, behind champion Ronald Rugumayo of Uganda, who won at 9-under. Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko finished runner-up at 5-under, while Kenya’s Greg Snow took third at 4-under.

For Mollel, the numbers highlight a tournament built on resilience and consistency: four rounds, four scores at par or better, and three rounds of 71.

His closing 32 on the back nine provided a fitting finish to a performance that kept Tanzania prominently represented among the tournament’s leading players.

Rugumayo’s winning performance was anchored by a superb final round of 6-under-par 66, which lifted him decisively to the top of the leaderboard.

His final-round charge separated him from overnight leader Okoko, who finished runner-up at 5-under par after closing with an even-par 72.

Snow completed the top three at 4-under par, carding a final-round 70.
