MOROGORO, Friday
More than 70 junior golfers are expected to battle for honours when the inaugural Tanzania Junior Open 2026 tees off today at Morogoro Gymkhana Club (MGC), with the two-day national tournament running from September 5-6.

The championship has attracted young golfers from TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, TPC Moshi, Mufindi Golf Club, Morogoro Gymkhana Club and Kili Golf Club, with the tournament expected to provide another important platform for developing Tanzania's next generation of golfers.

Anita Siwale, an organiser from the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) Junior Golf Development Committee, said preparations for the championship had been completed, with visiting junior players and teams already started arriving in Morogoro ahead of tommorow's opening round.

"The preparations are complete and the visiting players have started arriving in Morogoro. We are looking forward to a competitive two days," Siwale said.

She added that the event is a national championship and will provide an important opportunity for juniors to earn Order of Merit points, which will contribute to selection for the national junior team.

The tournament features age-group competitions for Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 boys and girls, giving players an opportunity to compete against some of the country's emerging junior talents.

TPDF Lugalo acting captain Samuel Mosha congratulated the club for its continued efforts in nurturing young golfers and commended individuals and businesses supporting the club's junior programme.

He singled out Son Vengetson, Moyo Restaurant and Joyce Ndyetabura for their contribution towards supporting the TPDF Lugalo junior team.

The Tanzania Junior Open is being staged alongside a 33-player junior tennis competition, further strengthening the event's wider youth-development focus.

The championship has received support from several partners, including The R&A, Pepsi, Vodacom, NCBA, Mkwawa Pure Drenking Water, Habari Wifi, Mosi Mobile Health Services, TGU, Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) and Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA).

The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the official launch of the MGC Youth Foundation Programme, followed by the Tanzania Junior Open prize-giving ceremony.

The youth initiative was conceptualised by MGC Vice-Chairperson Jacqueline McCormick and is aimed at creating a structured platform for nurturing and supporting young sporting talent at the club.
