Wanyeche Earns First-Ever WAGR with Inaugural Lady President's Cup Victory

Hawa Wanyeche has enjoyed many memorable moments in golf, from winning individual titles to captaining Tanzania's national ladies golf team.

However, Saturday, July 11, 2026, marked one of the most significant milestones of her career.

Wanyeche secured her first-ever place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) after winning the inaugural Lady President's Cup, a 36-hole tournament held over two days at the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam.

She carded rounds of 80 and 76 for a total gross score of 156 to claim the title by a single stroke.

The victory also saw her join Tanzania's elite group of WAGR-ranked female golfers, alongside Madina Iddi, Vicky Elias and Neema Olomi.

Speaking after her triumph, Wanyeche expressed her gratitude to the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU), led by president Timea Chogo, for introducing the tournament.

"I would like to thank the TLGU president and the entire committee for bringing this wonderful initiative. I am a very happy person today because it has always been my dream to earn a place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking," she said.

Wanyeche admitted she had not expected to win the championship after spending several months away from competitive golf due to other responsibilities.

"I wasn't expecting this result because I had been away from the course for quite some time. I also want to thank my fellow competitors for making the tournament so competitive and the leadership of Lugalo Golf Club for hosting us on a fantastic course," she added.

Second runner-up Madina Iddi also praised the organisers for staging the inaugural championship.

"I sincerely thank the entire TLGU team for organising this tournament with such dedication and giving us the opportunity to compete," Iddi said.

"More importantly, thank you for creating another opportunity for Tanzanian golfers to earn WAGR points. Congratulations as well on adding another player to the WAGR through Hawa's victory."

"Hawa (Wanyeche), congratulations on this well-deserved victory. Keep it up. I really enjoyed competing alongside all the players who participated. To those who didn't win this time, don't lose heart—next time, you could be the champions."

The tournament attracted more than 120 ladies, men's and junior golfers over two days in a championship organized by the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) in partnership with BLANQ Advertising Network.

A strong turnout of junior golfers added excitement to the inaugural Lady President's Cup, which forms part of TLGU's long-term vision of developing the next generation of golfers under its 2026-2030 strategic plan.
