Juakali Stars Spice Up Equity Waitara Trophy

Juakali Bongo movie stars stole the spotlight at the 2026 Equity Waitara Trophy after swapping the screen for the fairways and getting a taste of golf at TPDF Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, September 19.
The artists were invited by this year’s main sponsor, Equity Bank, which backed the prestigious tournament for the first time.

Their presence added a touch of glamour and excitement to the competition, while giving the entertainers an opportunity to test their skills and experience the beauty, discipline and challenge of golf.
The 18-hole tournament is held annually in honour of General (Rtd) George Waitara, the founder of TPDF Lugalo Golf Club.

This year’s edition was particularly significant as the event marked its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of honouring Waitara’s contribution to the club and the development of golf.
Speaking on behalf of General Waitara, who was unable to attend due to other responsibilities, Dr Edmund Mndolwa commended Equity Bank, the golfers and all participants for making the tournament a success.

Lugalo Golf Club Chairman Major General Wilbert Ibuge also praised Equity Bank for coming on board as the tournament’s main sponsor for the first time.
Ibuge described the bank’s support as a welcome development, noting that its involvement had added value to the tournament and demonstrated strong commitment to the sport.

On the course, Joseph Tango emerged as the overall champion after producing a stunning tournament record of nine-under-par 63 nett.
Tango’s exceptional round saw him dethrone defending champion Dr Edmund Mndolwa, who had won last year’s edition with an impressive six-under-par 66 nett.
With the Juakali artists providing an entertaining touch and Equity Bank making its debut as the tournament’s main sponsor, the 2026 Equity Waitara Trophy blended sporting excellence, entertainment and celebration as Lugalo Golf Club marked two decades of the course.
