Morogoro Open 2026 set to tee off with WAGR points

The countdown has begun for one of Tanzania's biggest amateur golf tournaments as the Morogoro Open Golf Tournament 2026 returns to Morogoro Gymkhana Club from August 28 to 30.

The annual championship promises three days of top-class competition, valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points and an exciting golfing experience as players from across the country converge on Morogoro.

Preparations are in full swing, with Morogoro Gymkhana Club Golf Captain John Kilian expressing confidence that the club is ready to host another successful edition of the championship.

The event will also mark Kilian's first Morogoro Open as Golf Captain, making this year's tournament a special occasion as he prepares to welcome golfers from across Tanzania.

"Preparations are progressing well, and we are excited to welcome golfers from across the country to Morogoro. We expect another highly competitive tournament that will showcase the growing standard of golf in Tanzania," Kilian said.

The three-day championship will be played in the strokeplay format, with the elite Division A competition contested over 54 holes, giving leading amateur golfers an opportunity to earn valuable WAGR points while competing for top honours.

Kilian said the event is also open to elite ladies, who will compete over the same 54-hole format.

"We are ready to host elite ladies too. They will tee off from the ladies' tees, although a few tee boxes will have the necessary adjustments," he said.

Organised in collaboration with the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and recognised by The R&A, the Morogoro Open has become one of the country's premier amateur championships. It is also unique as it is played on Tanzania's only brown golf course.

Registration is open in six categories: Division A, Division B, Division C, Juniors, Seniors and Ladies. According to Kilian, the categories reflect the club's commitment to developing golf by providing a competitive platform for players of all ages and abilities.

The championship has received sponsorship from Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited and Alliance One, whose support has helped maintain the tournament's high standards.

Kilian thanked the sponsors for their continued support of the annual championship and the development of golf in Tanzania.
