Nathwani delighted after retaining Arusha Open title

Defending champion Jay Nathwani says retaining the Reliance Insurance Arusha Open title ranks among the proudest moments of his golfing career.
He said that in an exclusive interview after successfully defending his crown in the prestigious 54-hole World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event at Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) which ended on Sunday 19 July, 2026.
Nathwani successfully retained the title with a winning gross score of 223 (+7) after carding rounds of 74, 74 and 75, finishing ahead of Christopher Botha (226) and Isiaka Dunia (227).
Speaking after the victory, Nathwani described the Arusha Open as the tournament he looks forward to most every year.
"Playing in the Arusha Open is my favourite event of the year, and winning it is even more special. Even though I don't compete as often as I used to, I always prepare well for this tournament because I want to keep the trophy. Successfully defending the championship means the world to me," he said.
Despite trailing after the opening round, Nathwani remained confident he could mount a comeback.
"Usually, I don't lead after the first day, but I try to stay close enough to the leaders. Patience is everything in golf because no lead is ever safe. I trusted my game and believed I could gradually catch up over the remaining rounds," he explained.
The Arusha golfer credited his victory to staying mentally disciplined throughout the demanding three-day championship.
"The key is taking one shot at a time. You have to stay in the present instead of thinking too far ahead. If you stick to your process, you'll stay focused and give yourself a chance to play well," he said.
Nathwani said the ranking points are important, particularly as he now competes less frequently.
"It's great that the Arusha Open offers WAGR points. Since I don't play many tournaments, this win helps me remain on the rankings for a longer period," he noted.
