Tanzania Shine as Olomi Leads Uganda Ladies Open

By Staff Writer
Tanzania’s golfers made a strong start to the Uganda Ladies Open Golf Championship 2026, with Neema Olomi leading the field after Thursday’s opening round at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.

Olomi carded 3-over-par 75 to take sole possession of the lead, opening a one-shot advantage over the chasing pack and putting herself firmly in contention for the title in the 54-hole tournament, which concludes Saturday.

"The game was good, although heavy rain for about an hour left the course waterlogged. Nevertheless, I thank God for the strength and determination to keep fighting and give it my best," said Olomi.

The result also gives her an encouraging start to her bid to improve on last year’s runner-up finish.

She will be particularly motivated by her runner-up finish at the 2025 Uganda Open, where she narrowly lost to Kenya’s Mercy Nyachama in a dramatic playoff at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club.

Behind Olomi, fellow Tanzanian Hawa Wanyeche also produced a strong opening round, signing for 77 (+5) to sit joint second.

Her performance leaves her just two shots behind her compatriot and firmly in contention.

Vicky Elias carded 79 (+7) to finish joint seventh, while Ayne Magombe posted 80 (+8) for joint ninth, ensuring four Tanzanian players finished inside the top 10 after the first round.

The fifth Tanzanian in the field, Yasmin Chali a former TLGU honorary secretary finished her opening round with a 104 (+32), placing her 44th.

With four Tanzanian golfers currently inside the top 10, the opening round has set up an intriguing battle for the championship.

Top women golfers from Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria and host Uganda have converged in Kampala for the championship, which once again carries World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) status.
